Combining shapes in Illustrator

In this lesson you’ll learn how to take some of the basic shapes you’ve made and combine them in a couple of different ways. This is a key building block of Illustrator, enabling you to create what might look like very challenging shapes.

New shortcuts

  • X: brings Fill or Stroke to the front

  • /: applies the “none” swatch to either the Fill or Stroke

  • alt/opt + drag: duplicate object

  • Command / Ctrl +: Zoom in

  • Command / Ctrl –: Zoom out

  • Command / Ctrl + Shift + B: show / hide Bounding Box

New commands

  • Object > Arrange > Bring to Front

  • Window > Pathfinder… [Unite / Minus Front]
